Nr hey was needed with the American latchstring lock, still in use. Pulling a string that had been threaded through a mnall door hole lifted the latch bad. Withdrawing the string locked the door from the inside.
English tumbler locks, invented 200 years ago, were much harder to pick than earlier models. The American cylinder lock, first produced during the Civil War, with its characteristic sawtooth key is extensively used today.
Tomorrow’s burglar may have to be an electronics or computer expert to open the newest locks, some still not yet on sale.
They are keyless, and programmed only to open with the correct push-button combination, cr when the lock’s brain box identifies the householder’s fingerprints, or recognizes his voice as he speaks to it — hopefully commanding "Open sesame!”
