Clean up time
THERE WAS A TIME when spring was heralded by robins, bursting buds and the opening of trout season.
Now the season is ushered in with clean-up campaigns. All the good citizens have to turn out to clean up the mess created during the year by the slobs.
And who are these slobs? The reasons why some people will thoughtlessly litter beautiful countryside — or tidy town or village streets, for that matter — defies the deepest reasoning of psychologists. We even use the word “thoughtlessly” with caution; for all we know, maybe they do it deliberately.
How else can you explain it? The famous naturalist John Muir once theorized that many if not most human beings don’t love the great outdoors and the beauties of nature, they actively hate it.
