MAYBE HATE IS the reason a man will drive west along Route 211, facing the fantastic mountain vista that unfolds before him, and instead of drinking in the grandeur of it all merely drinks ihe last swallow of his beer and ... throws the empty out the window.
Or what about the guy who tosses out a bagful of take-out hamburger leavings in the F-T Valley? He must hate it; if he loved it, he’d never do that to the place.
Or the housewife who empties the contents of the car ashtray along Harris Hollow road. She must detest the place. Or the teenager who wings a pop bottle out.of^his car as he zips (too fast) by Fletcher’s Mill. That kid must have a truly deep-seated animosity toward everything picturesque and eye-pleasing.
IF SOMEBODY comes up with a better explanation, we’ll buy it. In the meantime, we urge everyone who loves Rappahannock, everyone who appreciates its rare beauty, who is proud to be a Virginian — one of the loveliest of states — to join in the clean up April 8.
Maybe even the slobs will catch on this time. □
