I have sent the following letter to Mr. Newbill Miller, chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Rappahannock County; the Governor’s Council on the Environment, and the Hon. D.F. Slaughter Jr.
It is in regard to Vepco’s proposed 500,000 volt transmission line and reads as follows:
“1 should like to call to the immediate attention of the Board of Supervisors the frightening rapidity with which the surveying for the above project is proceeding, with or without permission.
“The publicity and attention given the smaller, now abandoned Pepco line through the center of the County may have somewhat obscured the dangers of this monstrous project. May I point out some considerations that should be of very real concern to the County, aside from the damages and heartbreak that would be suffered by those directly affected.
“The present selected route affects virtually all of the land in Rappahannock County adjacent to the Rappahannock River.
“It seems to me that this acreage is one of our County’s greatest assets, and we would be shortsighted indeed if we fail to do everything possible to preserve it. Its proximity to the Washington Metropolitan area makes it particularly attractive for estates and farmettes (50 acres and up). Land
