WE ARE APPROACHING the holiest day in all Christendom, Easter. It is a movable holiday like most of our holidays; only more so. It can come as early as March 22 or as late as April 25, or a variation of 34 days. It seems a pity that Easter, like Christmas, should be borrowed holidays that had their origin in paganism.
From my research into the matter it seems that Astarte, (sometimes Estarte) goddess of love, sex, fertility or what have you; consort of Baal) was the goddess of this pagan holiday. She was also known as Astoroth, Eostre and Ishtar. Her symbols of fertility are young chickens, ducks and rabbits. Just look around you. Which predominates — Christian symbols or pagan?
But, there is another side of the picture. There was an empty tomb. There was a Christ who came to teach us the WAY, that amid all the sham of a paganistic society we can find peace, a peace that they cannot understand. □
