WHAT MORE CAN YOU say about the Rappahannock High School cross country team? Two years in competition and two State A titles! The Panthers had it all again this year — individual stars and outstanding teamwork, and they and all of Rappahannock County have something to be proud of.
In some nearby counties, especially those to the east, much is made of the extra opportunities offered through establishment of giant high schools — huge schools at all levels, in fact. By making it big, we are told, it is possible to offer a broader range of studies, and a wider variety of varsity sports. The more games played, the more people get a chance.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out that way. The bigger the high school, the more intense the concentration on the “big” sports. Football packs ‘em in on Friday nights and all that money is raked in to build more bleachers and buy fancier uniforms. The result, all too often, is that fewer youngsters get a chance to actually participate in school activities and sports, rather than more.
