LEIGH SAID that each year the old equipment no longer capable of performing the difficult tasks called for is replaced by more modern, sophisticated units. He cited a mammoth new spreader for covering a potential snow-ladened road with chemicals and abrasives. This road giant can be loaded with 11 cubic yards of snow melting material (the average spreader has a four-cubic yard capacity), making it steadier thanother spreaders which periodically have to return to the stockpile for additional material.

Also standing ready for service on an experimental basis are two underbody plows (the blades are placed between the front and back wheels of the vehicle) which are capable of speeds of up to 40 to 50 miles an hour, clearing the roads as they go.

These newer pieces of equipment will be used on the state’s interstate system of roads.
