This is an open letter to the Hearing^ Center, Air Pollution Control Board, State of Virginia, Richmond:
This morning, November 16, is a beautiful crisp early winter morning, but when I opened the door to let the dogs out, a nauseat’ng rotten egg smell permeated the air. I knew of course that this was once again the awful smell of the FMC plant, manufacturers of rayon fibers, at Front Royal 15 miles away.
I understand that your public hearing the other night in Front Royal was solely for the purpose of determining whether the citizens of the Front Royal area found the odor obnoxious. Could there by any doubt! Who could like that odor; even those to whom it is also the sweet smell of money c*- a part of their job?
One of the speakers at the hearing said that obviously if there were many people who were annoyed or otherwise hurt by the odor there would have been more people at the hearing. My husband and I were able to attend the hearing only by a coincidence. Many people may well have missed the advance publicity in the newspapers. So I hope you will find some other method of finding out how people in the area feel about the terrible stench created by 'the Viscose Plant.
Of course the smell, although awful, is not the worst of it, I’m sure. I certainly hope that your agency sees that proper research is done to determine the extent of harm to the people of the area. There were several points mentioned at the hearing that should certainly be carefully investigated, one of the statements by a Winchester doctor that as a pathologist he had noted that a majbrity of the cases of people with lung cancer brought to the hospital seemed to be from the Front Royal area.
