The program was an outgrowth of a cooperative bull testing experiment conducted at the Beaumont, Bland and Southampton farms during the previous ten years.
During phase one of the crossbreeding project, eight sire breeds were evaluated. They were the Charolais, Holstein, Shorthorn, Angus, Hereford, Simmental and Brown Swiss.
PHASE TWO will make use of the offspring produced in the first phase. . This will permit researchers to compare the productivity of several kinds of crossbred cows with each other and with the straightbred cows. Phase three will then utilize the best sires and dams known to maximize beef production.
Only phase one results have been reported thus far. Using the traditional Angus and Hereford breeds as a control group; birth weights of progeny and other statistics were compared to a straight breed with a crossbred dam. Results showed larger birth weight and considerably larger 550-day weight.
As for carcass data, the crossbreds were heavier at slaughter but graded lower, primarily because they were less fat with less marbling. On the other hand, they were superior in carcass weight per day of age in yield grade and in percentage of lean cuts, except for the lean cut percentage of bulls which remained about the same.
CHAROLA1S and Simmental crossbred calves were the heaviest at birth and at slaughter. Weight of the other crossbred calves was intermediate. Straightbred calves were lightest.
