“Instead of producing the usual 3-year-old slaughter steers weighing 900 pounds, our crossbreeding research project has produced bulls that can be slaughtered at 18 months of age thereby cutting production time in half and increasing the weight by 200 pounds with as good quality meat as steer beef,” said Thomas J. Marlowe, professor of animal science at Virginia Tech.
MARLOWE said that the use of dairy breeds in beel production crossbreeding, including the Holstein and' Brown Swiss, will make for a rapid growth rate in milking ability. “We don't have a straight breed in this country that produces enough milk to permit calves to grow up to their genetic potential,” he said.
Working with Marlowe in the project are Robert C. Carter, Virginia Tech professor of animal science, A.L. Grizzard, farm coordinator and Robert Oliver, superintendent of agriculture for the Virginia Department of Welfare and Institutions. □
