In old days of the village blacksmith, it was a favorite sport to test your workhorse for his pulling power and perhaps even place a wager on him. “Old Faithful” has long been put out to pasture and his pulling power has been converted to combustible engines whose makers give honor to the original “pullers” and rate their engines by the number of “horsepower” for which they can match. It wasn’t long, however, until some of the farm boys became proud of their tractors and one probably boasted that his unit could out-pull all others in the area. It is reported that just this happened in the mid-west and a new farm sport was started. The idea has now drifted east and in Culpeper this Saturday there will be a tractor-pulling contest. The Culpeper Farm Show is being held from July 29 through August 3 and on final day, the Culpeper County Young Farmers Club will stage a tractor-pulling contest.
