MARKET HOG shows are good summertime activities for Virginia 4-H and FFA members, advises H. John Gerken, Extension specialist in animal science at Virginia Tech.
Youths can obtain one or more feeder pigs in late spring, feed and care for them during the school vacation months and wind up in late summer or fall with a project to show and sell at the county fair or other livestock events, Gerken said.
Profit may be realized from the sale of an animal and the premiums won at the show. In any event, there will be the valuable experience of feeding, caring for and showing a farm animal plus the assurance that our nation’s supply of red meat will continue.
