For breeders to be eligible to consign bulls to any of the three test stations they must be members of the Virginia BCIA and be on a complete wholeherd testing program, either through the Virginia BCIA or its national breed association. “At the Culpeper and Red House stations, bulls to be eligible for test must come out of the top half of their herds based on weaning performance,’’ Eller said.
When bulls come off test at these two official test stations, the top 70 per cent of the bulls, based on 140-day gain test performance and adjusted 365-day weight, will be eligible for sale.
THERE WILL be one sale at Culpeper on March 7. There will be two sales at the Red .House Bull Evaluation Center to be held Feb. 1 and March 1.
At the Southwest Test Station, breeders are not restricted as to the bulls that are eligible for test based on weaning performance. Bulls at the Southwest Station will be custom tested and there is no sale planned.
At Culpeper there are 163 bulls on test. Of these, 89 are senior aged bulls carried from September 1, 1973-November 30, 1973, and four are junior aged bulls carried from December 1,1973-March 10, 1974. The bulls on test, by number of breed are 105 Angus, 47 Polled Hereford, six Charolais, one Red Angus, two Black Angus, and two three-quarter-bred Simmentals.
Bulls on senior test will come off the 140-day test December 23 while the juniors will come off test February 10.
At the Red House Bull Evaluation Center there are 142 bulls on official test. Seventy-six are seniors and 66 are juniors. A third group of bulls was put on test at Red House in what is known as the spring age group in November.
