UPDIKE HAS TOP PERFORMING BOAR—Randall Updike of Washington, Virginia is the owner-breeder of the highest testing boar at the Virginia Swine Evaluation Station, Holland, Va. Upon delivery for performance testing, boars weigh a minimum of 35 pounds and are from Virginia Health Certified Purebred Herds. Each pen of boars begins tests at 63-65 days of age and is self-fed a basic corn-soybean ration until 220 pounds Feed efficiency and gain data are collected monthly. At conclusion of tests, loin size, backfat thickness and age are reported on an adjusted 220 pound basis.
Randall’s Yorkshire boar out performed the other 83 boars completing the test with these almost unbelievable statistics: Feed Efficiency, 2.67 lbs. of feed to make one pound of gain. Daily Gain 2.22 lbs. per day; Backfat .64 inches; and weighed 220 pounds at 128 days of age.
Qualifying boards will be sold at various auctions throughout the state.
TAX CONFERENCE—There will be a two day conference in Front Royal for area residents who help others prepare tax returns. Sponsors for the Tax Conference are V.P.I., the District Internal Revenue Service and the Virginia Dept, of Taxation.
Conference I on December 2 and 3 will basically cover tax items pertaining to Form 1040. Conference II, December 5 and 6 will deal with subjects of net operating losses, capital gains and losses, investment credit and recapture, and the 1974 Pension Legislation.
