THE Rappahannock and Rapidan were nominated as potential scenic rivers in 1970 by the state in accordance with the Scenic Rivers Act of 1970, which calls for the preservation of those streams and rivers in Virginia which possess attributes of pastoral beauty, natural features worthy of preservation and other benefits to the public. The Commission of Outdoor Recreation’s study will determine whether the rivers qualify for State Scenic River designation, and will make recommendations as to the administration and management of the rivers.
After the study is completed, the State Legislature and the Governor have to formally designate the two rivers “scenic.” The Commission of Outdoor Recreation hopes to complete its study by the 1976 legislative session.
