had some of these plants he found growing on the hillsides sent to his greenhouses in Greenville, S.C. The name poinsettia has become the accepted name for the plant in the English speaking countries in his honor. Around 1910, the poinsettia was being grown as a cut flower crop in California.
THE RED “petals” of the poinsettia are indeed leaves, not flowers as erroneously labeled by many. These special leaves, called bracts are usually red but modern breeding has developed pink, white, and marbled varieites. The brightly colored bracts surround the plant’s actual flower clusters, which are 1/4 inch across. It is believed that the bracts serve to attract insects as pollinators to the flower clusters. There are also small yellow glands near the flower clusters which secrete nectar for the same purpose. This year, take a closer look and get to know your plant.
