BEFORE FROST, or when night temperatures begin to fall below 60 degree F, the plant should be lifted and brought indoors to a well lighted window. Poinsettias will not bloom if they are in a room with electric lights being used at night. From October 1st to November 15th they must receive 8 hours of light a day. The plant should be placed in absolute darkness from 5:00 in the afternoon and brought back into sunlight at 8:00 in the morning. As soon as the bracts begin to show color this short day treatment may be discontinued. The time and effort involved in getting a plant to bloom a second time might not be worth it when the reasonable cost of a new blooming replacement is considered.
Recent research at Ohio State University indicates that laboratory rats do not suffer any ill effects from eating the leaves and bracts. However, it is not advised that any part of this or any houseplant be taken internally. The poinsettia is the most decorative plant at Christmas time.
