VERN L. HILL, Commissioner of the Division of Motor Vehicles, reminds parents who are planning to buy minibikes as Christmas presents for their children that minibikes are considered motorcycles and cannot be operated on any public street or highway, unless they are properly licensed.

Too often, Hill said, people consider them toys. Minibik-related injuries treated in hospital emergency rooms number 63,000 annually, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Nearly one-half of these injuries occur to children aged 10 to 15, and another one-fifth to persons 15 to 20. Males incur fourfifths of the injuries.

If a minibike is involved in a reportable accident and there is no insurance coverage, the owner suffers the penalties of the law by having his driver’s license and license plates on all vehicles owned by him suspended.
