Poinsettias
From Page 2 in the day and 65 at night. Avoid placing the plant near windows if there is any danger of chilling or near heat sources since drafts of any kind will cause lower leaves to drop. Research has shown that plants will last longer if at least one small light is kept burning nearby during the entire night.
Fertilizer is not generally required by poinsettias once they are fully developed. Depending upon your care, sooner or later all the leaves will fall off as the plant goes into its dormant period. The plant should then be placed in a cool location (45-50 degree F) and watered only enough to keep the plant from shriveling.
In April, cut the stems back 4-6 inches above the soil, and remove the old soil. Repot the plants in a longer pot with fresh soil and water thoroughly. After frost danger is over, place the pot up to its rim in a sunny location. After growth is started keep the plant watered and fertilized every 2 weeks. Around July 1, cut back the stems to 6 inches above the ground. Allow the new shoots to develop and as 6-7 leaves form, cut back the tips of the shoots leaving 4 leaves on each branch. Do cut back after September 1st to get flowers by Christmas.
