FERTILIZER use in Virginia was 230 thousand tons during 1974, 9% less than for 1973. The outlook for U.S. supplies is up, but will be tight for 1974-75.
Use of the three main fertilizers in Virginia were: nitrogen, 86 thousand tons in 1973and80 thousand in 1974; phosphate, 77 thousand tons in 1973 and 69 thousand in 1974; potash, 89 thousand tons in 1973 and 81 thousand in 1974. Thirty-one states and Puerto Rico increased their use of plant nutrients, 14 states decreased, and five states used about the same amounts.
Nationally, 7% more fertilizer was used in 1974 than in 1973. Nitrogen use was up 10%, potash increased 9% and phosphate use dropped 0.3%.
The outlook for U.S. supplies of the three plant nutrients for the coming fertilizer year ending June 30, 1975, are expected to total about 23 million tons. This figure is up 1.8 million tons over the total for the year ending June 30, 1974. Supply prospects for the three types are:
