In its native tropical habitat, the poinsettia ranges in size from two to ten feet, the largest being tree size. In frost free areas of the United States, the plant is a popular garden shrub. Most of the poinsettias grown come from the country’s two major growers located in Ohio and California. From these growers, cuttings are sent to local growers where they are potted up and grown until they flower. Horticultural research in the past decades has resulted in a hardier, longer lived plant. With proper care, a poinsettia should remain colorful in the home for several months.
