METAL or plastic cards sold by some manufacturers are no substitute for official Medicare cards, according to Philip E. Bettendorf, social security district manager in Winchester.

“The Social Security Administration mails official Medicare cards to people who have the protection,” he said. “You should always show your official card when you receive services covered by Medicare. It’s a good idea to carry your Medicare card when you’re away from home. If you lose it, you should immediately ask the people at any social security office to get you a new one.”

Medicare helps pay the health care ' ? expenses of people 65 and over, of disabled people who have been entitled to social security disability benefits for 24 consecutive months or more, and of many people with chronic kidney disease.
