There is a wide spectrum of recreational uses of land, ranging from a highly developed “Disneyland-type” park to an untouched wilderness area, Jacobsen said. Both of those extreme recreational uses as well as the types of recreation in between are valid, he said. Once it has been established that wilderness does have place, and that fact was established by the Congress with the Wilderness Act of 1964, the next question is where to establish the wilderness.
‘ ‘Must we go to Montana or Maine to find Wilderness?” Jacobsen -asked. “I feel we can have some in the Shenandoah National Park.” In January of 1975, Congress acknowledged that there is an urgent need to study and identify possible wilderness areas in the populous eastern states. Eighty thousand acres of the Shenandoah National Park is proposed for wilderness designation.
