Jacobsen said that some burning might help enhance the diversity of plant and animal species in the Park. “I’ve had some correspondence with Captain Keim,” Jacobsen said. “He’s concerned that our forest has become mature, has shaded out some plants and reduced the capacity of the park for deer.” Some species of trees will only reproduce in burned over or barren soil, Jacobsen said. The park Service might initiate burning in some areas. However, the question of controlled burning will not be decided for several years, Jacobsen said.
