A SIMILAR point worried Eileen Day. “All this talk of ‘management,’ limiting the number of people who go in. It seems so preconceived for a wilderness area.” Mrs. Day suggested that once the trails grew up and the water fountains were removed in wilderness areas that the number of people wanting to use those parts of the park would decrease anyway.
Jacobsen commented again that management of the wilderness area will be based on a “social, not a resource determination.” As demand increases, there will have to be a breaking point “some place between one and one million people.”
There will be no effect on the number of people allowed to enter the areas for several years, Jacobsen said, because the Park Service is still in a “data-collecting state.” About 90,000 campers slept on the ground in the park last year and Jacobsen predicted that the Park would allow that many again, this year.
