PHIL IRWIN, noted that RLEP had gone on record favoring wilderness designation for parts of the park in 1971. “In 100 years we may not recognize the park unless it becomes a wilderness,” he said. Irwin said that any members of RLEP who would like for the organization to reconsider their support of wilderness status could contact him and it would be discussed at a later meeting.
Art Wright, a resident of Flint Hill, had been invited by Phil Irwin to respond to Jacobsen’s comments on the Wilderness area. Wright works for the Wilderness Society, a forty-year-old non-profit conservation organization, which was instrumental in lobbying for the passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964. Wright fears that the wilderness proposal for portions of the Park suffers from much misunderstanding and misinformation with respect to public use of those areas.
However, a mixup resulted in Irwin’s closing the programs before Wright was asked to speak. But Wright talked about the wilderness bill and park administration with a small group of listeners anyway.
