Jacobsen said the Park Service will manage the Wilderness area to “promote and perpetuate” the wilderness traits of those areas of the park which may be designated as such. That means that roads in the wilderness areas will be closed, bridges removed, culverts ripped out and shelters torn down. The “carrying capacity” (or number of people to visit) in a wilderness area will be regulated so as to insure solitude and “a wilderness experience” for those who do enter the wilderness, Jacobsen said.
Eileen Day asked if the Wilderness designation would mean that landowners who have property adjoining the park couldn’t cross into the wilderness area from their own land. Would they have to enter the wilderness area from a check station at the top of the mountain? she wondered.
