A CONFERENCE was held this week in Washington, D.C. which was called so that various experts from various parts of the country, and various layers of bureaucracy, could talk about what is wrong with places like Washington, Va. Rural America was the subject of the conference, and the underlying theme of many of the participants seemed to be based on their feeling that rural living is terrible and the bureaucrats should do something about it.
There was talk about how to get more federal grants, about how to organize more efficient government, about how to “educate” those ignorant rural people out there in the ways of modern American—which, we suppose, are the ways of wallto-wall carpeting, piped in music throughout the house, garbage disposals in every room, color TV plugged into every outlet, a five or six car garage, and pavement from horizon to horizon.
