As to the belt tightening for the teachers—the quoted raise for salaries is 8% which includes the raise and the automatic step increase based on years of experience. If you subtract the step increase you will find that the teachers are receiving a raise of from 4-6%. This small raise follows a year in which the cost of living rose from 12-14% and will not go into effect until August of 1975 after eight months of cost ot living rises for this year.
I don’t recall this newspaper coming out with an editorial against the raises the coal miners received, even though these raises were reflected in increased costs to all of us through our electric bills and in other areas. I don’t recall any editorial on the huge profits made by the oil and sugar industries at our expense.
We have used all the holes in our belts and have drilled in more until there is no more belt to tighten.
