WELL, ALL of this concern about people out in the country is nice, we suppose. Maybe even neighborly. And from the big city newspapers we read, it seems everybody everywhere —even out in those suburban Nirvannas—could stand a little more opportunity for putting a little more money in their pockets.
But what is not appreciated is the attitude that somehow rural America is out of step with the times, that the poor people living out there amidst those plowed fields, pastures and woodlands are somehow being deprived of their fair share of the good life, and of how all of these pitiful conditions are something for some bureaucracy somewhere to “improve,” change or pave over.
Rural America? It could stand some genuine improvements, as what couldn’t. But applying the bureaucratic approaches which have made such a mess of the nation’s towns and cities won’t help the country, or the country people, a bit.D
