Mrs. Thackrey and I wish to nominate for meanest thieves of the year the people who dug up and hauled away 29 beautiful plants from the yard of our alternate home on the south slope of Brown’s Mountain in Rappahanock County, some time between September 9 and 19. Of 12 boxwood, nine were English box, of which three were more than 20 years old and the rest about 10 years old. The other three were columnnar box more the ten years old, one a rare import from Yugoslavia. Of nine azaeleas stolen, all but one represented several years of care and growth, as did the three floribunda (fashion) roses and one tea rose, two beautiful camellias, and a hydrangea.
