RAPP CHATS By RAP OWINGS, V.P.I. EXT. AGENT STEER CALF PRICES in Virginia last week were well above the national markets. Starting at Orange and continuing through Culpeper and Marshall, prices on steer calves were well above what most everyone expected. Two pens, total of 60 head of choice Angus steers, averaging about 570 pounds topped the Culpeper Sale at $47.00. Most choice and good grade steers sold above $40.00 per hundred. Medium steers ranged from $25.50 to $40.00. Mostly $30.00 to $35.00. Heifer calves averaged almost $14.00 per hundred under steer prices. Light wieght and lower grading heifers were hard to move. Most falling in the price range of $16.50 to $25.00. Heifers weigh450 to 600 pounds and grading good or better met with fair demand and sold mostly $28.00 to $32.00. YEARLINGS—At the state graded sales held during the week of September 22 - 25th demand for yearlings continued good with prices steady to stronger. September 12 - 18: Average of 3 year Steer Sales: 2747 head, 733 pounds, $37.34. September 23 - 24: 2yearSteerSales, 2140 head, 699 pounds, $38.
