Local welfare board files say that 448 individuals participated in the Rappahannock Food stamp program during the month of August. Some people who are eligible have refused to participate while others who applied were rejected because their resources exceeded eligibility limits. But according to state estimates, 568 people in Rappahannock should be eligible for food stamps.
Rappahannock’s welfare board members say their office receives about 20 applications for food stamps per month, mostly from people who have not applied previously. Thus, welfare board members feel Rappahannock residents are already aware of the food stamp program and “Operation Outreach” is not necessary.
