I was surprised and a little saddened to read Douglas K. Baumgardner’s letter in the paper last week criticizing me for questioning the propriety of some of our state legislators in representing clients registered as lobbyists at the same time that they seek to represent the people in general.

Because I know the Baumgardner family and like them all, I am embarrassed to be compelled to point out to Douglas and to your readers the flagrant distortions in his letter, which I can only assume were made because of an over-hasty reading of my original letter.

What were these distortions?

1. At the outset he said he was not interested at the moment in discussing whether putting marijuana smokers and “people filching food from a chain store” in jail destroys equal justice under the law.
