About 290,000 Virginians are now participating in the federal food stamp program. But an estimated 227,000 who qualify aren’t receiving the stamps, the Virginia State Department of Welfare estimates.
The U. S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the food stamp program, believes the job of “Outreach Coordinator” can be assigned to someone already on the payroll and should take no more than eight hours a week. Once an employe assumes the work, the federal government will pay onefifth of his or her salary, based on spending eight hours of a 40 hour week on the outreach work.
