THE Sheriff told the Supervisors, “If the county wants my department to function as it should— and I feel by the vote the county citizens gave me in the last election, and from people I contacted during the campaign, that they do want better law enforcement—then I feel die county must be willing to do something extra for better enforcement.”’
He added: “But as it is set up now, it is impossible to give the service the people want and deserve.”
Adding to the work load on his department, Sheriff Buntin said, is the judges’ requirement that deputies be present at the court house on court days. In January, this meant one period of five straight days of court, and it means at least two days a week all the time. Adding to the problem is the requirement of Judge William Carson of the General District Court for two deputies while tihe is presiding in court. “Since they had a judge shot in Orange County, they’re all on edge,” said Buntin.
