“Well, we can’t take any action until budget time,” said Supervisor J.R. Latham, who presided at the meeting in his capacity as vice chairman of the board; Chairman Pete Luke was absent because of illness.

“We’re going to have to have help,” Sheriff Buntin reiterated. And when Wood continued to express his displeasure over rising county costs, Buntin noted that in neighboring Madison County, the sheriff’s department has “ten or twelve people.”

The total salary involved for an extra Rappahannock deputy would be at least $8,040 a year, of which the county would pay one-third— if the Compensation Board approves. “I’m going to have to ask for it,” Buntin said.□
