Harris dies
Former journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner Edward Harris of Huntly in Rappahannock County, died Sunday, March 14, after a long bout with cancer. He was 65.
Harris had been an active member of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection and was active in the League’s unsuccessful fight against the Vepco powerlines which will be strung across the county. He was also Democratic Party county cochairman at the time of his death.
Harris, who was bom in St. Louis, began his journalism career as a columnist and rewrite man in 1933 for the St. Louis Star Times. In 1940 he joined the staff of the St. Louis Post Dispatch where he wrote a local political column. He also served as a correspondent for Time, Life and Fortune Magazines from 1936 to 1943. He also served as the Washington correspondent for the Post Dispatch until 1953, when he went 'to Los Angeles to become their West Coast correspondent.
