In 1944 he covered the Dewey campaign and in 1940 he was the first newspaperman to find out that Truman was Roosevelt’s running mate. Harris won the Pultizer Prize in journalism in 1946 when he exposed the tidelands oil lobby.
Harris left the Post Dispatch in 1958 and the next year bought a 900-acre cattle farm at Huntly. While he was operating his farm, Harris still found time to write two syndicated columns. One was on farming and the other was an advice column called “Adam and Eve.” He was also a real estate agent.
Harris was a member of the White House Correspondents Association and the Sigma Delta Chi journalism Society.
