VEGETABLE GARDENS: Last year several people complained about root maggots or wire worms in their root crops. Carrots, radishes, beets and turnips seemed to be the vegetables most severly affected. If you had this problem last year you may want to apply a 25% Diazinon spray concentrate (Spectracide) to the area you plan to plant these vegetables. Make application to soil surface as a broadcast spray before planting. Thoroughly mix the chemical into the top 4-8 inches of soil. Follow the mixing directions and safety precautions on the label.
BOXWOOD' LEAFMINERS: For some reason the boxwood leafminer has been particularly abundant during the past two years. This is the little critter that feeds on the leaf tissue between the outer leaf layers. If you will look at the underside of the boxwood leaves, you will see little ridges or mines in which the larvae live and feed. If you are concerned about leafminers, bring a sample of your boxwoods by the Extension Office for identification and control recommendations. The time to spray is in early June, not now*.
