IT IS a common misunderstanding that poor eyesight is a barrier to eye donations, says R. Kenneth Hudgins, executive director of the Old Dominion Eye Bank.
Eye tissue which has been donated, on death, by an individual with poor eyesight, Hudgins said, - can be just as valuable and effective in sight-restoring corneal transplant operations as tissue from the eyes of a person with perfect vision. The pnly portion of the eye used in a corneal transplant operation, he pointed out, is the cornea, the thin, transparent lens-like “window” of the eye.
Hudgins said the need for eye tissue is urgent and the number of requests received from Virginia eye surgeons increases each day. During the past six months, he said, more than 51 blind persons
