Consider the population trend, and the disappearance of farmland, on a national and global scale, and the result is short-sightedness of truly distressing proportions.
“PEOPLE have to live somewhere,” say the proponents of development, sitting back and smiling smugly in their assurance of having uttered a profound truth. People have also got to eat, and those who would pocket shortterm profits at the expense of long-term sanity in land use do so at an ultimate cost which future generations will be forced to pay.
Those who claim a “right” to pave over and uglify the landscape have got to be put in a proper perspective, lest we all suffer from the folly of their actions. Let’s stop quibbling about those myopic, socalled “rights,” which are extracted at the expense of the present and future well-being of our entire society, and put a stop to trends which can only lead to disaster and misery. □
