from 100 to 87, while the number growing corn for grain or seed increased by six, with 817 acres planted in 1969 and 1,654 planted in 1974. The harvest from these acres was 58,559 bushels in ‘69 and 102,056 in ‘74.
The number of orchards in Rappahannock showed a sharp decline over the same five year period. There were 66 orchards in 1969 and only 47 five years later. The orchard acreage dropped from 2,879 to 1,985. The county produced 24,935,266 pounds of apples in ‘69 and 15,314,149 in ‘74.
The large majority of farms are still family owned. Individual or family farms number 136. Four farms are owned in partnership and three by corporations. The remaining farm in the county is under some other form of ownership. □
