SHARON Kilpatrick, a Rappahannock county housewife and farm partner, will not have her name on the Virginia presidential ballot as Eugene McCarthy’s running mate. Hie McCarthy-Kilpatrick campaign failed to get off the ground last Friday when they did not have the required number of petition signatures by the 12 o’clock deadline. According to reports, the McCarthy-Kilpatrick drive fell 3,018 short of 9,007 signatures needed.
Sharon thought the total would have been much closer if the officials had counted several more pages of names brought in by volunteers minutes after the noon deadline. She said she had been told by people in the McCarthy campaign that they were going to talk to their lawyers to see if the results should be contested. “But I haven’t heard anything. I intend to write in my name and McCarthy’s,” Sharon said.
In a prepared statement released over the weekend, Sharon stated that “since we have fallen 3000 short (in the petition drive) I can 'only conclude that the petition effort was not started soon enough. I cannot claim that we could have made up the difference but we asked for and were not given petitions. We could have gotten five to six hundred names locally.”
