SHARON was asked by McCarthy three weeks ago to run as his vice-presidential candidate in Virginia. She agreed but took no action to publicize her campaign, thinking that she would hear something from headquarters. “I waited but nothing happened,” she said. Weekend before last, she said that she and her husband told a few friends of her involvement in politics but still did nothing official.
The first real publicity came with her formal introduction as McCarthy’s vice-presidential running mate in Virginia at a National Press Club Luncheon in Washington, D. C., last Wednesday. (McCarthy has approximately 40 running mates so far in his campaign to get on the ballot in all 50 states as a presidential candidate.)
SHARON is the daughter-in-law of Washington columnist James J. Kilpatrick. She and her husband, Sean Kilpatrick, live on Hawthorne Farm in Rappahannock County.
Sharon does not rule out die possibility of trying to make the ballot with McCarthy again in 1980, but she would see to it at that time that the petition drive was started sooner and handled better, if she had to do it herself. In the meantime, she hopes that a write-in campaign will be organized, at least in her district, for the McCarthy-Kilpatrick ticket. □
