nock farmers increased from 53.1 years in ‘69 to 55 years of age in 1974. The principal occupation of 143 farmers in the county is farming. One hundred and nineteen farm operators in 1974 had principal occupations in fields other than farming.
There have been significant changes in the types of farming operations carried out in Rappahannock. The number of dairy farms over the five year period dropped from 77 to 43, hog and pig operations decreased from 86 to 53. The number of horses and ponies in the county changed from 378 to 354 and the number of chickens, three months old or older changed from 2,502 in 1969 to 1,815 in 1974.
