Schools 90 Per Cent
The supervisors gave final approval to the 1980-81 county budget with a bottom line total of $2,776,911. Of that amount, the school fund comprises $2,539,000 or approximately 90 per cent.
In another financial matter, the board voted to advertise a change in the method of collecting real estate and personal property taxes suggested by county accountant Wally Cox.
The proposal calls for taxes to become due and payable on December 5 of the year in which they are assessed. A 10 per cent penalty will be charged after that date with an additional eight per cent interest applied on the amount due after January 1.
Luke noted that unpaid taxes last year equaled the revenue generated by 10 cents on the county’s tax rate.
At the request of the board, commonwealth’s attorney Baumgardner agreed to research the maximum interest rate that can be applied on delinquent taxes.
