Tuesday, she was getting ready for a drive into an Alexandria ballet studio.

Next year in school, Kati will take only three academic subjects with classes scheduled between 1 and 4 to leave mornings and late afternoons free for ballet. “At first I was thinking about quitting school but mother and father didn’t like that at all!’’ Besides ballet, Kati’s hobbies include piano and singing lessons. “It’s all dancing and music,’’ she smiled.

Pernella’s interests lie in gymnastics but, she added quickly, it’s a small hobby compared to Kati’s absorbtion in ballet. “I take lessons only once a week,’’ she said.

Crossroads Community

Pernella is the youngest of two children and in Denmark, lives with her parents in Koge, a tiny community an hour’s drive from Copenhagen. “It’s not a town. It has only nine houses,” she explained. Her big brother, 20 years old, is away completing his compulsory military service, only a nine-months stint in Denmark, Pernella said.

The Monahans have planned side trips for Pernella that will take her back into America’s historic past. She’s scheduled to visit Amy’s sister in Charlottesville for two days where they will tour Monticello and the University of Virginia. Then they’ll drive to Washington,
