“As it stands right now, I don’t see any sewer for Sperryville,” said Maurice Biddle, former chairman of the Rappahannock Water and Sewer Authority.
In an interview Monday, Biddle announced the loss of almost $900,000 in federal funds for the sewer project and his resignation from the WSA due to lack of participation by other members of'the authority.
Malfunctioning septic fields in the little Blue Ridge community spew gallons of raw sewage daily into the Thornton River, a situation that earned Sperryville the ranking of number five health hazard in the state of Virginia.
The sewage problem also led to the closing of Lester Deal’s sandwich shop five years ago by the local health department. Health department officials considered shutting other town businesses but delayed action. in light of gains toward building the sewage treatment facility.
