In a ceremony which could be considered the first candlelight commencement, 250 students of Piedmont Technical Education Center received certificates after successfully completing their vocational training. Though the school is located on Route 15 south of Culpeper the commencement was held in Culpeper County High School auditorium.
The program was scheduled to be held on the grounds outside at Piedmont but the weather forced rescheduling to Culpeper, a wise move, for the processional was interrupted by a storm which left that school without electrical power, especially lights. In the darkness the students completed filling their seats as the band played on. Candles were found and placed on the stage and a portable microphone was brought to the stage by a member of the audience along with a small flashlight. The entire program was held in the dimly lighted atmosphere, the first candlelight commencement. This was also the first commencement of the Piedmont Center which includes students from the counties of Rappahannock, Culpeper, Madison and Orange.
